1. Getting the App
Download the Image Optimizer app from Shopify's App Store if you haven't already.
2. Selecting a Compression Method
After installing the Image Optimizer, you should choose the Lossy or Lossless compression method. Each method offers its own advantages and you can read more about them in this article - Lossy or Lossless – which one is the best for me?
We strongly recommend that you try out our Lossy compression.
3. Alt Texts (optional)
Search engines use the information that alt text provides to determine the best image to return for a search query. This is a great way to both bring new visitors to your site and increase your rankings with search engines.
You will need to choose one of the default Alt Text templates or customize your own template - Alt Text Settings
4. Filenames (optional)
Creating descriptive, keyword-rich file names is crucial for image optimization. Search engines not only crawl the text on your webpage, but they also crawl your image file names.
You will need to choose one of the default Filename templates or customize your own template - Filename Settings
5. Convert PNG to JPG (optional)
You also can convert PNG to JPGs. This can dramatically reduce the file size up to 80% of the original size. Image Optimizer can convert Product, Collection, and Blog Post Featured images. PNGs with transparency will be converted and set a transparent background to white. This compression is lossy, which means that there may be some degradation in image quality from the original. This will change the files' extension, and any hard-coded image URLs will need to be updated.
6. Selecting a Plan
You should select your plan and click "Optimize images".
7. Optimizing images
Image Optimizer will optimize all your images and send you an email notification when the optimization is complete.
